The Most Incredible Video on YouTube

Tuesday, March 10th, 2009

I find myself linking to YouTube videos on Twitter at least a couple times a day. Usually to music videos, funny commercials… You know, the light, fluffy stuff that gets you through a 4PM slump when you should be working, but all you really want to do is take a nap under your desk. But I believe that some videos need more than 140 characters.

At a recent dinner to celebrate a friend’s upcoming wedding, I was asked if I  had ever seen a video called “99 Balloons.” Immediately I thought of the pop song by Nena and German lyrics that I can never seem to remember. But I was assured that it was a video worth checking out, and having now seen it, I’d say that is possibly the understatement of the year. It is, quite honestly, the most beautiful video that I have ever seen on the Internet. It is a story that is simultaneously heartwarming and heartbreaking. It’s a story that I think everyone ought to know, because it is the ultimate example of hope, faith and love. Honestly, there is nothing that I can say that will do it justice… Just watch.

What is Web 2.0?

Thursday, January 29th, 2009

Now that I’m in my third week of class at Ryerson AND working as a web intern at St. Joseph Media, I’ve become slightly obsessed with all things web-related. Back in the summer when I was browsing through job listings, I kept running across the phrase “Web 2.0″ and had absolutely no idea what it meant. I Googled it, of course, but the details were still a little fuzzy.

Enter Kat Tancock, my Creating Website Editorial prof at Ryerson (and web editor of Best Health magazine). On my first night in class, she shared a great video by Michael Wesch that is not only very cool, but does a pretty good job of explaining the awesomeness of the Internet. And because I think it’s so fabulous, I’m going to share it with you. Enjoy!
