Academia, how I’ve missed you…

There are a few things that I will admit to being addicted to, happily and without shame: magazines, good books and big cups of tea are around the top of the list. But it seems that somewhere along the line, learning has crept its way into the ranks. As such, I am heading back to school. Again.

One very cool thing about my line of work is that I feel like I’m always learning new things. Whether I’m researching a story or proofreading someone else’s work, I end up taking in a lot of information… which often comes in handy during Jeopardy, or late-night games of Trivial Pursuit.

But there is something about learning in a formal environment that I just really enjoy. I like lectures. I like taking notes. I like walking away from a class feeling like I can do something that I couldn’t do before. And that’s exactly what I’m hoping to take away from the continuing education class I’ve enrolled in at Ryerson University

Ah, back to being a student. All is right with the universe… even if it’s only for one night a week.

Starting in January, I’ll be attending classes for “Creating Website Editorial,” which is part of the Magazine Publishing certificate program at Ryerson. I’m hoping to learn all about the business of magazine websites, because I’m starting to pay almost as much attention to magazines online as I do to those in print. (Although I’m not sure anything will ever fully replace my love of the shiny paper… We are talking about a decades-long adoration, after all.)

So, yes… Expect to read all about my adventures in the classroom in early 2009! (Speaking of which – can you believe how quickly the new year is creeping up on us? It’s a bit terrifying, I must say…)

And now, over to you guys. Have you learned anything interesting lately? If you could take any class, what would you choose and why? Let me know!

    Alicia!

It’s like you read my mind. And, guess what? I’m taking a course at Ryerson too! It’s the copy editng course, also starting in January. Boo hoo, I miss school! (Less the homework, presentations, early classes, and exams.)
